What is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is an electric pump typically installed in a pit in the lowest point of your house. When you have water in your basement or crawlspace, it flows into the pit. As soon as the water level reaches a certain point, the float valve on the sump pump activates and flushes the pump like a toilet. This pumps the water out of the pit through a discharge pipe to the outside. Sump Pumps are a cost-effective way to prevent major damage to your home.

Why isn’t my sump pump working?

Some possible reasons for your failing sump pump include:

Power Failure

A leading cause for the failure of a sump pump is an electrical power outage. To prevent this, have us install a back up battery powered sump pump complete with a battery charger and high water alarm.

Sump Pump Switch Failure

One of the most common causes for sump pump failure is a faulty float switch. Often, the switch won’t turn on because the sump pump has shifted, triggering the float that operates the switch to get wedged against the side of the sump basin. In addition, if the switch becomes clogged or jammed, the float switch can become stuck and leave your sump pump running. This is why it is important to manually check your sump pump to ensure that your pump’s float switch and float arm assembly are moving freely. Lastly, the switch may be accidentally disabled if the sump pump leans along the edge of the pit making it difficult to flush out excess water.

Frozen Discharge Pipe

In the freezing cold winter, a frozen discharge pipe will prevent excess water from leaving your home. When the pit fills up, the water has no place to go but all over your basement floor or crawlspace. Likewise, if the discharge pipe isn’t pitched properly, water will collect, freeze and cause a blockage.

Faulty check valve

As water is discharged out of your home, it passes through the sump pump check valve. This valve prevents discharged water from entering the sump pump again. If your check valve is missing, or if it is not working properly, it will need to repaired or replaced.

Short-cycling of Sump Pump

When a sump pump liner is too small for the actual pump, water is discharged more quickly than the liner can fill and your pump continuously turns on and off. This creates a short cycle, reducing your sump pumps efficiency and life span.

Improper installation of the Sump Pump

Make certain that your homes sump pump is installed by a reputable plumber and that the sump pumps manufacturer’s installation instruction are strictly adhered to.
